DC 3Rs - Inventory of 3Rs Knowledge Sources

A study carried out by the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre compiled knowledge sources (websites, publications, databases, organisations, events, expert groups, etc.) relevant to the 3Rs. This study, is now available.

To make the most of this knowledge base, DC has developed an online application to allow sharing. Theapp allows the user to consult 3Rs knowledge sources listed in the JRC study.

EURL ECVAM Search Guide

The EURL ECVAM Search Guide provides search principles and procedures, suggested search terms and user guidance together with an inventory of relevant information resources to support untrained database users in finding high quality information on relevant alternative strategies and methods.

It can be downloaded (pdf) or requested in paper copy (for free) from the EU Bookshop.

EURL ECVAM DataBase on ALternative Methods (DB-ALM) / EU Scieence Hub

Collection of data-sets providing factual information (not only bibliographic references) presented as evaluated (and therefore ready-to-use) data sheets.
DB-ALM

The EU Reference Laboratory for alternatives to animal testing, EURL ECVAM, has reviewed models being used for research in seven disease areas:

respiratory tract diseases
breast cancer
neurodegenerative disorders
immuno-oncology
immunogenicity testing for advanced medicinal therapy products
cardiovascular diseases
autoimmune diseases

FCS-free Database

Fetal Calf Serum (FCS, also known as Fetal Bovine Serum, or FBS) is a common supplement of animal cell culture media. However, moral and scientific concerns demonstrate the urgency to switch to an FCS-free medium. The FCS-free Database, part of the 3Rs Database Programme, provides an overview of FCS-free media for cell-culture. A forum function for each record allows researchers to discuss the applicability of each product. The database is offered by the 3Rs-Centre ULS in collaboration with Animal Free Research UK.

ISSG search filter

This Search Filter Resource is a collaborative venture to identify, assess and test search filters designed to retrieve research by study design or focus. The search filters resource aims to provide easy access to published and unpublished search filters. It also provides information and guidance on how to critically appraise search filters, study design filters in progress and information on the development and use of search filters. Inclusion of a search filter is not an endorsement of its validity or a recommendation.

How to find Alternatives?

Researchers must be aware of methods that may replace, reduce or refine animal experiments. Scientists are familiar with searching for literature on their subject of interest. Searching specifically for 3Rs methods, however, is something which may require specific search skills.

Read the University of Utrechts article on formulating a search strategy to find 3Rs information online.

Careful use of fetal calf serum

As an in vitro researcher you need good models that give reliable results. Fetal calf serum is often added to the culture fluid, or the medium in which you grow the cells for your research. This is because cells grow well on fetal calf serum. But there are also concerns. What should you be aware of when purchasing and using fetal calf serum? In this video the points of attention, and how it is possible without fetal calf serum.
